Torres de Hercules by Rafael de La-Hoz

Architect Rafael de la Hoz completes the “Torres de Hercules” in Cadiz. They are a symbol of the legendary Pillars of Hercules and the tallest buildings in Andalusia.

Two cylindrical, white towers rising from a flat pool of water. On the façade-a giant lattice-appears the mythical motto from the legend of the Pillars of Hercules, “Non Plus Ultra” (nothing further beyond), warning sailors in the Mediterranean of the edge of the known world.

At a height of 126 meters, the “Torres de Hercules” rise up from the Bay of Algeciras, as a new benchmark in the Campo de Gibraltar and the transition of the Straight, as their uniqueness changes the area’s landscape.

Located in the Bay of Algeciras (Cadiz) , the new construction, which is surrounded by a man-made lake, is comprised of two identical 20-storey cylindrical towers, joined by a crystalline prism which houses the hallways connecting the two buildings.

Its outer appearance is configured by the structure of the building, a gigantic lattice which completely surrounds the perimeter. They contain the giant letters of the legend “Non Plus Ultra”. Their job is to protect the inside of the building from excess solar radiation while providing panoramic views of the Bay of Algeciras, the Rock of Gibraltar, and the Serrania. This grid extends past the building’s limits, as a “unique element” protecting the terrace roof-top deck, while at the same time acting as a base for possible energy collecting and telecommunications systems.

The project, with a total surface area of 19,000 square meters, was contracted by the Valcruz company of Cordoba. They will use the majority of the building for office space, although some of the floors will have commercial space and services, such as: coffee shops, bank branches, a travel agency, a messenger service, etc.

On the top floor, 80 meters up, will be a lookout restaurant. Above this, a panoramic roof-top deck will boast unique views over the Straight of Gibraltar, Mount Musa and the Alcornocales Natural Park.

The building has a main entrance for pedestrians and cars which provides a clear view of the towers. The 200-spot ground-level parking lot is located on the other side of the towers and is organized around a landscaped area.

The complex has a strategic location, which utilizes all of the region’s potential while at the same time being easily accessible. The objective is to take advantage of all of the possibilities offered by the Bay of Algeciras and the accessibility by the major motorways from Seville, Gibraltar, the Costa del Sol, and the Jerez de la Frontera airport.

Bill’s House by Tony Owen Partners

Tony Owen Partners have designed a house in Sydney, Australia for a client who is a concrete contractor who built the house himself.

From the architects:

The house was designed to make maximum use of concrete and solid construction. Because of the client’s heritage, the design was influenced by the materials and forms of Mediterranean Architecture. The curved shell forms reflect the sails of the fishing boats from the Greek Islands. In addition the client does a lot of entertaining and wanted a house which maximized the connection to a large outdoor space.

Bill’s House by Tony Owen Partners

The client’s brief was to create a unique and iconic home. This presented challenges as the site is situated in a fairly homogenous suburban location. As a result, the house has been designed as a series of blocks which modulate the scale and minimize the impact of the house to the surrounding areas. It consists of a series of different internal levels, which step up progressively from the street. The house is quite solid from the street and progressively opens up to be completely open to the rear. These changes in levels created an opportunity for the strongly stepped external massing as well as the complex interplay of the stairs in the central internal spaces.

The house has an ‘L-shaped’ configuration to maximize the solar aspect for the living spaces. There is also a central courtyard to the west which allows for light to penetrate the middle of the house and also serves to break up the massing of the facade.

A feature of the house is the large central staircase element. The original idea for this stair came from the James Bond movie ‘Never Say Never Again’. This stair adjoins the central courtyard so it is always bathed in light. The stair connects the various level changes in a single fluid sculptural element in dark polished concrete.

The dominant feature of the house is the curved sail-like rear white walls. These walls soften the massing and bring a lightness to the house. The walls break up the space and progressively dematerialize the house into a series of cantilevered vertical and horizontal planes to the rear. The kitchen and living areas of the house finally dissolve into a large outdoor room for entertaining. This space contains a glass swimming pool with a pool bar and an a minimalist outdoor seating enclosure. This structure has more the feel of a lounge area or bar with reclining daybeds and fabric clad structures. The use of mirrors and chandeliers enhances the luxurious lounge feel. The rear space also contains a terraced market garden which enhances the European character of the space. The living room and outdoor areas are connected by an indoor/outdoor fireplace. The spaces revolve around this element and further blur the line between inside and out.

The complex geometries of the curved structures were resolved in 3-D by computer. Like all of our projects, this house, was designed entirely using 3-D computer modelling software. This allows the architect to see the influences of the site and spatial relationships on the design. This technique is called parametric design and you can see in real time how the design changes as you adjust to changing environmental variables.

The Interior of the Fitzwilliam Hotel in Belfast by Project Orange

The Fitzwilliam Hotel in Belfast, Northern Ireland has recently opened, featuring an interior that has been designed by Christopher Ash from the London-based Project Orange.

The Fitzwilliam in Belfast is meant to reflect the “baronial modern” style of the Fitzwilliam Hotel in Dublin, a theme which combines that of a grand, stately baronial mansion house with modern decor.

The Fitzwilliam Hotel in Belfast by Project Orange

Located adjacent to the magnificent Opera House in the heart of Belfast, the sister hotel to the original Fitzwilliam in Dublin, Project Orange were appointed to work on the interior fit-out of this five star, 132 bedroom hotel.

Bringing a slice of the Manhattan Manor House to Belfast, our designs bring together simple, bold colours, warm oak panelling, quirky fabrics and luxurious marbles to create a decadent, glamourous setting.

The ground floor lobby draws on the inglenook as a central element of the manor house to create a key zone to the hotel. With traditional oak settles and library shelves to peruse either side of the contemporary fireplace, guests will be able to sit back and relax. Stepping away from the inglenook, the double height reception area unfolds with floor to ceiling glazing throughout and hints of luxurious marbles, bronze and oak detailing.

The first floor restaurant plays on the theme of the traditional “oak room” becoming a series of three dining carriages all lined in oak throughout. Booth and banquette seating with playful mobile privacy screens create a rich layering to the space and on one side overlook the double height lobby.

The Paraty House by Marcio Kogan Architects

Paraty House’s two reinforced concrete boxes, sit atop each other, connected on the mountainside of one of the islands of the colonial city of Paraty and Angra dos Reis (between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro), like two modern prisms between the large colossal stones of the Brazilian coast.

The building projects outward from the mountain, almost onto the beach, in an 8m cantilever. The house finds balance in the topography of the land, creating an extensive open doorway and living space in the practically untouched nature. Paraty House features a furniture collection showcasing 20thcentury design, including works by many well-known artists.

The residents arrive by boat. After stepping out onto the sand a metallic bridge positioned over a crystal-lined reflecting pool leads to a set of stairs connecting to the lower volume. This volume contains the living room, kitchen and service area. The continual internal area has a 27m span and huge glass windows to take advantage of the view of the sea.

The same entrance stairs also lead to the upper volume that houses the bedrooms. In the front part of the house, retractile panels of eucalyptus sticks protect the bedrooms from the sun. The areas that face the mountain have small internal patios with zenithal lighting, and use exposed reinforced concrete, which grants a striking texture to the walls.

The entire top of the house is covered with terraces, used as observation decks for the residents, and as a garden for sculptures, medicinal plants and edible herbs.

Villa O in Cap Ferrat

Villa O is a contemporary rental home located in Cap Ferrat in southeastern France.

Full description after the photos….

Villa O in Cap Ferrat:

Palms and pines line the winding route down into St Jean. Pass the pretty bars and restaurants, the beret? clad artists, Jean Cocteau street sculpture, the port filled with sleek yachts and families on the sandy beach. The chauffeur turns up the private road to Villa O. And there it is – tiers of terraces, shields of glass, a tricolor of white walls, cobalt sky and pine green trees.

The light and space are overwhelming. A champagne cork pops and canapés are served on the vast semi? circular balcony. Below, a whirl of activity sees your cases brought inside to be carefully unpacked. The villa is beautifully set up to make you feel totally relaxed and totally at home.

There are over 4,500 square meters of gardens. Lavender?lined pathways provide panoramic views over the peninsula. A cornucopia of flowers bursts through rockery walls. Olive, Cyprus and eucalyptus trees give shape and shade; jasmine, rosemary and jacaranda perfume the entire estate. Soft, manicured lawns undulate to an aquamarine pool. A wooden footbridge leads to our two?bedroom, magic garden, Tent house Suite.

A Balinese style pool?house provides shade in which to read, dine or snooze away a hot summer afternoon. Step into the infinity pool that curves around the garden. Cocktail in hand, gaze out over the bay filled with yachts. Breakfast, lunch and dinner can be served in your suite, on the terrace, in the dining room, on the lawn or by the pool (either pool of course). Dinner at 8 or a midnight feast with lanterns. Attention to detail is phenomenal because that’s how we like it.
